Legendary drummer Calvin Weston joined Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time at age seventeen and appeared on multiple recordings with the innovative fusion band, including the classic Virgin Beauty with Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia. For over thirty years, Calvin’s progressive and driving approach to drumming has powered recordings with George Adams, Derek Bailey, Samm Bennett, Jean-Paul Bourelly, James Carter, Trevor Dunn, Melvin Gibbs, Eyvind Kang, Billy Martin, Marc Ribot, James “Blood” Ulmer and The Lounge Lizards.
Calvin has recorded with two well-known actor/musicians – John Lurie and Tricky – and has appeared on many soundtracks, including Get Shorty. He currently performs and records regularly with several groups, including Free Form Funky Freqs with guitarist Vernon Reid of Living Colour and bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, his rhythmsection partner from Ornette’s Prime Time.
This unique and groundbreaking album bridges divides in contemporary music by bringing together virtuoso instrumentalists from what sometimes seem to be different musical worlds – modern jazz and progressive rock, American and European scenes, black and white players, acoustic and electric instruments.
The music is a collaboration between legendary drummer Calvin Weston and Chicago polymath multiinstrumentalist Karl E. H. Seigfried. Together they have composed a unique album of new music that is driven by Calvin's powerhouse drumming and Karl's wizardry on guitar (electric, acoustic, lap steel) and bass (electric, fretless, upright).
Calvin and Karl are joined on the recording by an amazing array of players who have had a major impact on jazz and rock of the last half-century:
Jay Beckenstein (Spyro Gyra)
John Helliwell (Supertramp)
Thijs van Leer (Focus)
John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood)
Vernon Reid (Living Colour)
Todd Rundgren (Utopia)
Nik Turner (Hawkwind)
Jack Walrath (Charles Mingus Quintet)
There has never been a recording quite like this one. Check it out for yourself!
